With both teams fielding a team that included a great mixture of standard and sizes due to the rules of the Shield, banning players that have played successfully in past Shield or Bucks Cup Semi Final games. Buckingham senior players having won the Lewis Shield two seasons ago and Milton Keynes involved in several Buckinghamshire Cup Semi Final competitions.
This left a fairly even contest, and the very last game at Field Lane kicked off at 2.00 pm, a subdued crowd, many feeling a little jaded from the “final party night”, the evening before.
The game itself was fairly even up to the last 5 minutes, whilst the early nerves took hold the sided swopped penalties, and then a more settled period saw some good runs by both sided but it was Buckingham proving the stronger as they ran in two tries on 17, and 38 minutes the later converted and it looked as if the visitors would run away with the game, but the home side managed a final volley when presented with a penalty, Mike Dean having scored the first 3 points, successfully pulled of his second and the half finished 6-15 to our local visitors.
Milton Keynes needed to raise their game and the first chance was a penalty which Mike Dean added with ease, 10 minutes on and the visitors were penalised for coming over the top in a ruck, Dean, after slotting the 3 previous penalties, decided to give it shot, the position was just inside Buckingham`s half and way out on the touch line, Dean was centre of posts with a great kick, this took the score to within 3 points of the visitors.
This gave Milton Keynes some heart and come agonisingly close to scoring on several occasions, but their enthusiasm was to be the down full with Milton Keynes really pushed to steal the game, and with just 5 minutes to the end of play Buckingham run in good try, and then more gay abandon passing from Milton Keynes, Buckingham sealed the day with another try, with 1 conversion pushed the score to 12-27, the referee blasted the last rugby whistle at Greenley`s to end of the game.
Buckingham now moves on to the Semi - final of the Lewis Shield.
