The high scoring result does not reflect the intensity of this game, Oxford arrived with an air of proving that they are worthy of being in Southern Counties North, with the home side determined to mark there supremacy on the league, this season right from the first game.
I was a full 25 minutes of mainly pressure from Milton Keynes, but great defence by Oxford before the stale mate was broken with the first of 8 tries by Milton Keynes was scored, this coming from several scrums on the Oxford try line and pressure finally allowed wing forward, Steve Christie to touch down outside half Phil Powell added the 2 points.
Oxford retaliated with an attack up field but could not break through the Milton Keynes defence and settled for an attempt at a penalty goal that missed in the strong wind.
The pressure of the first half was eased by another forward attack on the Oxford line with the Milton Keynes opposite wing forward Dan Rolfe scoring, the conversion missed the home side were pleased with their first half efforts, and went to the break 12----0 up
Milton Keynes started the half as they left the last, with 2 unconverted tries within 12 minutes, the first again from the Milton Keynes scrum, grinding the energy out of the visitors, a wheeled scrum gave the put in back to Milton Keynes, and the ball was spun out to winger Andy Champ to score, the second from scrum half Dan Pearson making a blind side break from the centre of the field, avoiding tacklers Pearson grubby kicked the ball over try line, he was then illegally barged of the field of play, but managed to get back on his feet and still beat the Oxford defender to score, this early onslaught was split with Oxford scoring a lone penalty. On 22 minutes Oxford finished their contribution to the game with another penalty, the home side answered, almost by return with a penalty from Phil Powell, the score now looking comfortable for Milton Keynes at 25--- 6. The final 15 minutes became a nightmare for the league new boys as Milton Keynes run riot with 4 more tries and 2 conversion`s by Phil Powell.
The first of these by Dan Rolfe grabbing his second try, scorching half the length of the pitch to touchdown, The second by Dan Pearson with his second try, picking up the ball from just inside the defence try line, sprinted the whole length of the field to score, at this stage ,if boxing rules applied to Rugby, the Oxford coach would have thrown in the towel, but the visitors had to soak up the last 2 tries, Rob Conway from the kick off caught the ball and went by himself to score under the posts, and to wind things up for Milton Keynes, the ball spun out again to winger Andy Champ to bag his second try. Final score a satisfying 49----6.
Milton Keynes are away next Saturday (18th) to Chipping Norton , this will be a true test of Milton Keynes commitment to command respect in this seasons encounter.
